How to Make Homemade Saltwater Taffy
Making homemade saltwater taffy is a fun and rewarding project, perfect for gifting or enjoying during the holidays. This sweet treat can be flavored and colored to suit your taste.
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or other flavoring)
Food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Ingredients: In a large saucepan, combine the sugar and cornstarch. Stir in the corn syrup, water, butter, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
Cook the Taffy: Continue cooking the mixture without stirring until it reaches 260°F (127°C) on a candy thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the taffy by dropping a small amount into cold water—it should form a firm ball.
Add Flavoring and Color: Once the taffy reaches the right temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the baking soda, vanilla extract, and food coloring if desired. The mixture will foam slightly due to the baking soda.
Pour and Cool: Pour the taffy onto a greased baking sheet or marble slab. Allow it to cool slightly until it’s just cool enough to handle.
Pull the Taffy: Grease your hands with butter and begin pulling the taffy by stretching it out, folding it over, and pulling again. Continue this process until the taffy becomes light in color and has a glossy finish.
Shape and Cut: Once the taffy is ready, roll it into a long rope and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Wrap each piece in wax paper to prevent sticking.
Enjoy: Your homemade saltwater taffy is ready to enjoy! It can be stored in an airtight container for several weeks.
